Eye Care Tips to Help Seniors Maintain Their Vision

Eye care is essential to our health at all stages of life. As we age, eye care becomes increasingly important. Whether due to genetic factors or influenced by our daily activities, it’s vital to keep our vision sharp to maintain an active lifestyle. In addition to medication aide courses, our staff can assist seniors with eye care.

As a provider of elderly daycare in Forest, Virginia, we will share eye care tips for seniors:

  • Maintain a balanced diet.
Certain foods can help improve vision, such as kiwis, papaya, and red bell peppers which are rich in Vitamin C. Foods rich in antioxidants, lutein, and beta-carotene can also promote eye health and help seniors age gracefully.
  • Protect the eyes from the sun.
Although we all need Vitamin D from the sun, protecting the eyes when exposed to sunlight is important. Direct sunlight can damage the eyes, so be sure to bring a pair of sunglasses.
  • Wear prescription eyewear.
Prescription contact lenses and glasses help seniors see clearly and reduce eye strain. Without them, the eyes work twice as hard to focus. Additional eye strain can tire out the eyes and lead to other vision problems.
  • Schedule regular eye exams.
An annual eye exam can detect common eye problems related to aging, like macular degeneration and glaucoma. Eye exams can also reveal the onset of other general health problems like hypertension and diabetes.
